With my forays into the kitchen I’m usually just grateful if my recipe doesn’t burst into flames a la Homer Simpson, so “going awry” wouldn’t much matter…

Oh Radish, I do exaaaactly the same thing. God, thank you for admitting that you freak out when recipes go awry too, you’ve made me feel that much less insane! Sometimes I’ll get so illogically bummed out when an ingredient goes bad or I realise I’m missing something critical that I’ll actually have to shelve the whole thing and order in. Sad….
This sounds delightful however. I love fancy mash!

When i first had it, at a friend’s house years ago, it had a crust on top – which was delic! But, I think that there are more recipes without crust than with – I suppose it’s just what I was eating first – so I got this perception in my head. In any case, what KS made – was muy tasty even if it all got smushed together!

Looks lovely! And interestingly (or not), I’ve never met a shepherd’s pie that did have a crust. In fact, I’ve always thought the name a bit misleading, to tell you the truth. Mostly, around here anyway, they are just ground lamb or beef with some sort of gravy mixed in, topped with a layer of veg such as corn and/or carrots, topped with the mashed potatoes, and baked. Comforting, but dull. Crust sounds better.
